Brief overview of the University

 

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka,  commonly called UNN, is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Southeast Nigeria. The University was founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe and his colleagues in 1955, but formally opened on 7 October 1960. It is a convensional university and has three campuses – Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla.

The University of Nigeria is the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modelled after Michigan State University,  United States of America. It is the first land-grants university in Africa and one of the five most reputed universities in Nigeria.

 

Mission Statement – to place the university of Nigeria, Nsukka in the forefront of research, innovative, knowledge transfer and human resources development in the global academic terrain, while promoting the core values which will ensure the restoration of the  dignity of man.

The University’s Vision is to create a functional, globally competitive and research-focused university which is not just an Ivory Tower, but also responsive to the needs of the society while delivering world class education and knowledge.

The University’s Motto is to restore the dignity of Man.

Strategic Objectives of the University: In keeping with her motto, the main strategic priorities of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka are to remain in the forefront of research and the development of human resources for innovative knowledge transfer in the global academic terrain, while promoting the core values that will ensure the restoration of the dignity of man.

Range of Subjects/Degrees Offered and Level of Study: The university has 17 Faculties and 102 academic departments covering different subject areas such as STEM, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, Business & Financial Studies, Health/Medical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Law and Education.  The university offers 108 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programmes. (see Appendix 001 – List of Academic Programmes in UNN). The University has 48,432 students altogether.  Figure 1 shows the distribution of the student population across the various levels of study.
